A scenic walk from Dedham to Flatford and back
Today’s walk was a truly picturesque journey through one of Suffolk’s most iconic landscapes. We started our day with some hearty pub food at The Marlborough, a cozy local pub in Dedham. Fun fact: I actually worked here for a short period when we first moved to Suffolk — it’s always special to return and enjoy the great atmosphere and delicious food!
With our bellies satisfied, we set off across the charming fields and into the tranquil valley of the River Stour. The scenery was simply breath-taking — lush green meadows, blooming daffodils, and the gentle sounds of the river flowing nearby. As we crossed the fields, the peaceful countryside stretched out before us, inviting us to take our time and soak in the beauty.
Our walk took us to Flatford, a spot famously associated with John Constable’s paintings. The view of the river, the historic mills, and the iconic Bridge Cottage was just as stunning as I remembered. We paused for a while to enjoy the scenery, watching the water ripple and imagining the scenes that inspired some of the greatest landscape paintings.
Heading back towards Dedham, we wandered through more idyllic farmland and woodland, the fresh spring air filling our lungs and our spirits. The day was bright and clear, making every moment of the walk a joy.
Overall, today’s outing was a perfect blend of good food, beautiful countryside, and a touch of local history. It’s always a pleasure to explore this special part of Suffolk — a place that feels like a living painting. If you’re looking for a scenic, peaceful walk, I highly recommend retracing this route. You’ll leave feeling refreshed and inspired by the timeless beauty of the Stour Valley.
