Alton Water: A late winter family day out

A family day out at Alton Water in February

February may not be the most popular month for outdoor adventures, but our todays trip to Alton Water proved that a chilly day can be filled with warmth and joy—especially when spent with family. Armed with our coats and a sense of adventure, we set off to explore the scenic views and wildlife that this beautiful area has to offer.

Our adventure began with a stroll along the water’s edge, where we were delighted to encounter a herd of majestic Highland cows. Their long, shaggy coats and gentle eyes made them incredibly endearing. As we watched them graze peacefully, we marveled at their serene presence, a perfect reminder of the beauty of nature. A few playful calves even ventured close, much to the delight of the kids, who couldn’t resist snapping a few pictures to remember the moment.

As we continued our walk, the serenade of singing birds filled the air, creating a delightful soundtrack to our family outing. Blue tits, robins, and other feathered friends flitted about, adding bursts of color and song to the landscape. We paused to listen, captivated by the cheerful chirps and tweets that signaled the arrival of spring just around the corner.

One of the best parts of Alton Water is its popularity among locals and their dogs. We encountered many friendly faces—both two-legged and four-legged—as we walked along the well-maintained paths. The sight of happy dogs bounding alongside their owners brought cheerfulness to the crisp February day. It was heartwarming to see so many people enjoying the outdoors and connecting with nature.

Overall, our family day out at Alton Water was a delightful reminder of the simple joys in life. If you’re looking for a lovely spot to enjoy the great outdoors, I highly recommend Alton Water. Just be sure to bundle up, bring your family, and keep your eyes peeled for the wonderful wildlife that calls this area home.
