A Lovely Long Weekend Escape to Belgium: Exploring Bruges and Dunkirk
The sun haven’t even kissed the horizon on a Friday morning, we found ourselves headed for a long weekend escape to Belgium, eager to immerse ourselves in the enchanting charm of Bruges and the historical significance of Dunkirk. With its cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and vibrant culture, this trip promised to be a delightful adventure.
Friday: Arriving in Bruges
After a 2 hour ferry ride and a fairly short drive, we arrived in Bruges, often dubbed the “Venice of the North.” The moment we stepped onto the cobbled streets, we were greeted by the sight of shimmering canals and towering spires. The Markt, the city’s bustling central square, took my breath away. I couldn’t resist the temptation of sampling some of Bruges’ famous Belgian chocolate; a local chocolatier’s pralines were my first indulgence of the weekend.
Saturday: long walk in Bruges
After a long night sleep and a hot morning drink with a breakfast, we enjoyed a peaceful walk along the canals, where the golden hues of sunset reflected beautifully off the water. Dinner at a cozy bistro followed, featuring delightful hot soup in the could weather accompanied by a local brew. The ambiance in Bruges is something special—each street corner feels like a painting come to life.
Sunday: Discovering Historical Dunkirk
On Sunday, we set out for Dunkirk, a short car ride away. This coastal city is known for its pivotal role in World War II and offers an intriguing blend of history and seaside charm. Our first stop was the Dunkirk waterfront. Must be a special day or an end of season gathering for the jellyfish as there were thousands of them.
Sunday: Back to England
Returning to England on Sunday, I dedicated my day to export the hundreds of photos I have managed to capture over this lovely weekend. A visit to the West Flanders was a highlight of this year. I wandered through the winding streets, discovering quaint shops and delightful cafes, and of course, indulged in a famous Belgian waffle drizzled with chocolate sauce.
The weekend concluded with a long cloudy stroll along the canals. I reflected on the memories created during this lovely long weekend. Belgium, with its enchanting cities and rich history, had truly captured my heart. We will definitely come back summer time.
As we boarded our car from our friend address to home, I couldn’t help but dream of my next adventure, already longing for the warmth of Belgian hospitality and the charm of its timeless cities. Whether it’s the allure of Bruges or the poignant history of Dunkirk, this corner of Europe is a treasure trove waiting to be explored.
