Sudbury to Long Melford and back

A beautiful 10 miles afternoon walk.

A scenic walk in Stour Valley.

Today, we set off on a delightful walk from Sudbury to Long Melford, a journey that combined the beauty of nature with a touch of history.

Starting at the Sudbury Rowing Club, we were greeted by the tranquil views of the River Stour. The gentle sound of the water flowing alongside us made for a perfect beginning. Following the river, we took in the serene landscapes, wildflowers, and birds chirping—a reminder of the beauty just outside our doorstep.

As we reached Ropers Lane in Long Melford, we turned onto the B1064, excited to discover what lay ahead. Our first stop was the impressive 13th-century Market Cross, a historical landmark that reminded us of the town’s rich heritage. From here, it was a short stroll to the stunning Holy Trinity Church. The church, with its beautiful eastern decoration, was a sight to behold and beckoned us inside for a moment of reflection.

After soaking in the ambiance of the church, we strolled to the green, where we couldn’t resist indulging in a treat from Mr. Whippy. The ice cream was a sweet reward for our efforts and the perfect way to enjoy the lovely surroundings.

As we started our journey back to Sudbury, we noticed the clouds beginning to gather, but the dark clouds couldn’t dampen our spirits. On the way back we seen a field with a lot of hares running and jumping around, like they knew its eastern, also some highland cows peacefully laying in the grass.

The walk was invigorating, filled with laughter and memories, solidifying our love for this picturesque route.

Despite the change in weather, we returned to Sudbury with smiles on our faces, grateful for a wonderful day spent in nature and history. Here’s to more adventures ahead!
