A Christmas morning squelch

Forget the living room sofa—today, we traded the wrapping paper for walking boots. Our Christmas morning walk from Hintlesham to Chattisham was the perfect cocktail of festive weather: a bite of frost, a heavy layer of cloud, and eventually, that brilliant, low December sun that makes everything look like a postcard.
Here’s how we spent our December 25th in the Suffolk countryside.
Frost, Mud, and Morning Light
The walk started with a crisp, white frost clinging to the hedgerows, but it didn’t stay “neat” for long. As the temperature rose and the sun broke through the clouds, the ground gave way to some serious Christmas mud.
We navigated the slushy paths with the kind of focus usually reserved for carving the turkey. Along the way, we weren’t the only ones out enjoying the fresh air; we passed several horses looking sturdy in their winter rugs, puffing steam into the cold air as they watched us pass.
A Moment of Quiet
Halfway through, we took a detour to the local church. There’s a specific kind of peace you only find in a village church on Christmas Day—the smell of old stone, the lingering scent of pine from the wreaths, and a moment of quiet reflection before the afternoon chaos began.
The Ultimate Reward: Crisps and a Cold One
No Christmas walk is complete without a finish line. We pulled into the local pub, boots thoroughly caked in Suffolk clay, for a well-earned drink. There’s nothing quite like the first sip of a festive pint (or a glass of something sparkling) paired with a couple of bags of classic pub crisps. It was the perfect way to toast to the day before heading home for the big roast.
The Stats
- Conditions: Frosty start, muddy middle, sunny finish.
- Highlight: Seeing the sun hit the fields between Hintlesham and Chattisham.
- Fuel: Pints, crisps, and Christmas spirit.
