🌄 Our epic Lake District adventure: from Suffolk to stunning scenery
We kicked off our journey from East Suffolk in the dead of night—because nothing says adventure like avoiding rush hour on the A14 & A1! Plus, it gave us a head start to beat the traffic and make the most of our trip. After a couple of charging brake stops (we’re not saying the car was tired, but it did ask for a coffee break), a hearty breakfast, and almost 7.5 hours on the road, we finally arrived at The Quiet Site in Cumbria, near Ullswater.

🛏️ The best accommodation we’ve ever had (Yes, Seriously!)
Honestly, this was one of the best places we’ve ever stayed! The site was sparkling clean, super organized, and run like a well-oiled machine. The staff? Friendly enough to make you forget you’re in a new place, and the glamping cabin was so stunning, we considered staying forever—until we remembered we had a whole lake to explore. It was the perfect base camp for our upcoming adventures.
🌅 A short stroll around Ullswater: the lake that looks like a mirror
Our first afternoon was dedicated to a gentle walk along the eastern side of Ullswater and Pooley Bridge. And let me tell you, this lake is so picturesque, even the ducks were Instagramming each other. The water was slightly choppy, but reflected the sky perfectly—giving us enough material for at least three more travel blogs. It’s no wonder poets like Wordsworth were inspired here!
🚤 Day two: cruising, steam trains, and a waterfall
On our second day, we set off to Ambleside, from where we took a lake cruise to Lakeside. We saw a steam train chugging along—talk about a throwback! We then wandered over to Newby Bridge, where we admired the historic sights before sailing back to Ambleside. The highlight? Climbing up the streets to Stockghyll Force, a waterfall so majestic it made us feel like nature’s VIPs.
🧗 Crossing mountains and discovering history: The slate mine and Bannishead Quarry
The third day took us over mountains to Bannishead Quarry. To get there, we had to pass by an old slate mine—a place with history as rocky as the stones they mined. Did you know slate mining in this area dates back centuries? It’s like walking through a giant, stone-covered time capsule. Afterward, we visited Ritson’s Force at Wasdale Head, where I bravely (or foolishly?) decided to wash myself in the freezing river—note to self: water this cold is not for the faint of heart!
🏰 Holker Hall & Gardens, and a visit to Ulverston’s notables
Day four saw us exploring Holker Hall & Gardens, a stately home with a history as rich as its flower beds. We enjoyed a delicious lunch there, feeling like royalty for a few hours. Then, we headed to the Laurel & Hardy Museum—because who doesn’t love a good slapstick comedy?—and the Sir John Barrow Monument in Ulverston. The drive back over the mountains was a scenic finale to the day.
🛍️ Shopping, sweets, and surprising delights
On day five, we indulged in a culinary journey through the towns. First stop: Grasmere Gingerbread, a treat so tasty it’s practically a national treasure. Did you know it’s been baked since the 1800s? Then, we sampled some surprisingly delicious Hungarian Goulash at the Village Inn in Bowness-on-Windermere—who knew the Lake District was also a culinary hotspot? Of course, we ended our day with a quick drink at The Swan Hotel & Spa by Lakeside, soaking in the views before heading back to our cozy village retreat.
🚐 Homeward bound: The long road back
After an early start, we began our long journey home, with two more charging stops and a mountain of memories. By the end, we’d walked and hiked at least 100 miles (seriously—our feet are still protesting), snapped around 1,900 photos, and emptied our pockets of every spare change. A video of our trip will soon be uploaded—photos alone couldn’t do justice to this unforgettable holiday.
Here are some of the snaps we took on this trip, click to see them and scroll through.
