Dedham to Flatford

Great summer weekedn day at the river.

☀️ Melted But Happy

We decided that this searingly hot summer day was the perfect time to go for a walk. Naturally, we chose the iconic route from Dedham to Flatford Mill and back. The riverside was absolutely packed, looking less like a quiet country stroll and more like a water park that time forgot. We saw kids swimming, people desperately balancing on paddleboards, and kayakers trying very hard not to crash into each other. Meanwhile, the local cows were grazing in the fields, looking at us all with supreme judgment for exercising in this heat.

A serene riverside view featuring rustic brick houses with a wooden walkway, surrounded by greenery and reflected in the calm water.

🎨 Constable Country (Where Painting Met Reality)
This stunning area is known worldwide as “Constable Country” because the famous 19th-century artist John Constable spent his life painting it. Back then, it was all peaceful landscapes and romantic lighting. Today, it’s mostly sun cream application and rogue inflatables. Flatford Mill itself dates back to the 18th century and was actually owned by Constable’s family. It’s incredibly historic, meaning the buildings have survived hundreds of years of British weather—which is more than can be said for my sunscreen.

🛶 The Great Riverside Chaos
Walking along the River Stour today was pure entertainment. Half the population of the region seemed to be in the water. We watched brave souls on paddleboards doing that specific, tense wobble before inevitably splashing into the river. The kayakers weren’t doing much better, treating the river bends like a medieval bumper car arena. Honestly, watching people try to steer while melting in the sunshine should be an Olympic sport.

🐄 The True Masters of the Meadow
While humans were frantically paddling and sweating, the local cows were putting on a masterclass in relaxation. They were scattered across the water meadows, lazily grazing and completely ignoring the human circus just yards away. I have never envied an animal more. They don’t have to worry about step counts, sunburn, or paddleboard etiquette—just pure, uninterrupted grass chewing.

🏡 The Loop Back to Sanity
By the time we turned around at Flatford Mill to head back to Dedham, we were thoroughly baked. The walk back gave us another chance to admire the beautiful, historic thatched cottages and rolling fields that make this area so famous. It really is a picture-perfect part of the world, even if our faces were the colour of ripe tomatoes by the end of it. We survived the heat, dodged the paddleboards, and definitely earned a very large cold drink.
